Many people believe that academic scholars make the best advisors to government. This is because as a society we believe that those that are professors in the top universities and colleges in the nation are the smartest, and the most well educated. However it was Calvin Coolidge that said there are lots of educated derelicts.
Another issue is one that concerns the business community; if you have academics advising governments on which regulations to make but those professors serving in government have never actually had to make a paycheck or never actually run a business for profit, then you are liable to get some pretty bad advice.
Still, we assume that those intelligent folks there in academia are smart enough to figure it all out and have enough book smart to make the proper decisions, which will be in the best interest of our nation and the citizens of the United States of America.
It is often said; “That the Road to Hell Is Paved with the Greatest of Intentions,” and it is truly amazing how much damage can be done by someone that tries to solve problems for things they know nothing about. Academia could be charged with this often enough.
Of course, it also works the other way; you would want an entrepreneur from the construction industry advising governments on IT computer systems for healthcare? Thus, it makes sense to carefully pick and choose exactly who the government uses as advisors or czars in the presidential administration or executive branch. Quite frankly, we are not doing that right now. I am very concerned. Please consider all this.
